What is a salvage grocery store?

A salvage grocery store is a retailer that buys closeout, surplus, and short-dated groceries at a deep discount and resells them well below regular retail. The same stores go by many names: bent-and-dent, scratch-and-dent, discount grocery, bargain grocery, surplus grocery.

What they sell

The inventory is name-brand product that fell out of the mainstream supply chain for reasons that have nothing to do with safety:

  • Short-dated — approaching its best-by date, still within it
  • Overstock — a brand made or bought more than its regular channels could sell
  • Discontinued — the SKU is retired but the product is fine
  • Packaging changes — old label, new label coming
  • Cosmetic damage — a dented can or crushed case, the origin of the bent-and-dent name

What a legitimate salvage store doesn't sell: recalled product, unsafe product, or — in most states, for most categories — product past its date. More on that distinction in short-dated vs. expired.

Who shops there

Everyone who likes name brands at half price. Salvage grocers are a fixture in rural areas and small towns, and many serve communities that bigger chains skipped — including food deserts where they're the most affordable grocery option for miles.

Where the inventory comes from

Traditionally: liquidators, closeout brokers, and word of mouth. The catch is that the best truckload deals go to the biggest buyers first. A CPG with four truckloads of surplus calls the national salvage chains; by the time a broker brings smaller stores the leftovers, the price carries someone else's markup.

That's the gap Sidestream exists to close. We source truckloads directly from CPGs, manufacturers, and distributors, then split them across a network of independent salvage and discount grocers — each store commits to the pallets it can actually move, at truckload pricing. One truck, one pickup, no middleman markup stack.
